Mr Dai Jones – ‘Dai Llanilar’

The Society is deeply saddened to report the passing of Mr Dai Jones, Llanilar.

A legendary character – farmer, international sheep dog trialist, soloist, raconteur, radio presenter, master broadcaster and an Honorary Vice President of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society.

Originally born in London, where his parents had a dairy, he came home to Wales .

Dai began his public career on the Eisteddfod stage, winning the blue riband. He soon moved on to a stellar broadcasting career presenting the dating show which pre-dated Mr and Mrs; Sion a Sian and found his way into the hearts and homes of so many viewers. Soon the landmark series of Cefn Gwlad would see him introducing rural characters to the screen; capturing social history in an easily viewable format; a show he fronted for some forty years. He was awarded a Bafta for his services to broadcasting.

He had several phobias, cats and water were the worst! and will always be remembered for his sense of humour and his clumsiness in a coracle! His work ethic was incredible, and his very favourite role was that of Presenter at the Royal Welsh Show, where he really was amongst his people.

Dai joined the Society in the early nineties but had long been a fan and advocate of the Welsh breeds. Breeding Llanilar Welsh Cobs one of his first was regally bred, the Parc Welsh Flyer daughter of Cathedine Welsh Maid, Cathedine Welsh Lady.

He will be sorely missed, and our Society is poorer for his passing.

The Society wishes to extend its sympathy to Olwen, his family and friends.

I Dai .

Un dyn oedd Dai.

Un dyn, oedd yn gwenu i bawb.

Yn ei ddireidi;

Yn ei ddrygioni;

Yn ei ddileit;

Un dyn oedd yn denu

Diddordeb y byd

At bob dim Cymreig a Chymraeg.

Buwch Ddu,

Coben,

Balwen,

Ast ddefed goch,

Hen hwch neu ddwy

A chombács –

Cyhyd nad cath mohoni!

Do, mi ddenodd Dai

Bob un ohonom

A bu ymhob cartre hefyd

Yn gwmni i ni gyd.

Ond gyda gwên

Wnawn gofio – amdano,

A’i golli.,

.
