DNA – why not profile mares, fillies and colts now for 2022 -be ahead of the game

DNA – DO IT NOW – DON’T DELAY

With just under six weeks to go before the Welsh Government’s final registration date for foals born in 2021 closes on the 30th of November, we would like to remind breeders that the profiling of mares whose first pure-bred foal is to be registered by the Society is imperative.

We cannot; and will not process any registration applications unless the dam has been profiled, and that profile lodged with the Society.

There has been considerable delay with many profiles and parentage tests this summer and early autumn due to technical issues suffered by the laboratory in Ireland. This is beyond the control of the WPCS; however, we have been working closely with Weatherbys Scientific to enable the profiling of mares where their offspring was to be sold at the autumn sales or indeed was already sold for export where a travel timeline was in place. We thank them for their valiant efforts to catch up following the problems they have experienced.

With this post we publish a brief apology from our DNA processors – but with the added request of breeders from both the WPCS and the laboratory.

If you have covered mares or filles for the first time in 2021 and the resultant 2022 foal will be a pure bred– that mare needs to be DNA profiled.

If you have a colt that needs to be licensed and requires a DNA parentage test as part of that process, please act on this now.

Not doing the DNA profiling causes delays and frustrations. It’s getting your ducks in a row situation – do the DNA profiling early and then we can register quickly – it’s simple.

We also would like to thank those breeders who have been so patient and understanding in waiting for the results to be processed – even though they have submitted in good time.

This is a plea looking forward to next year’s processing – if the DNA needs profiling, please take advantage of the wintertime and purchase DNA kits so that when your vet is next with you on a visit they can harvest the sample from your filly, mare or colt allowing sufficient time prior to the lodging of registration forms for the stock that animal breeds.
