Mrs T M Smalley – MYND STUD

The Society sadly shares the news of the passing of Mrs Teresa Smalley of the Mynd stud at the grand age of 92. A member since 1949, it could be said that the Society was in her blood as her grandfather Charles Coltman Rogers of the Stanage stud was a member of the Society’s initial Editing Committee in 1902, and her aunt Mrs Hambleton bred the Llanerch ponies.
Mrs Smalley not only bred both Welsh Mountain and Welsh ponies at her Mynd stud, but for a period Welsh Cobs, standing Coedllys Stardust. Notable among the animals she owned were Kirby Cane Vogue, Coed Coch Pedestr and Reeves Coral. The latter’s Downland Romance daughter Mynd Cowrie being a consistent winner at major shows. Mynd Nestorius by Mynd Titus was exported to America where he had a considerable influence on hunter ponies.
For many years Mrs Smalley was the driver behind the Scottish and Northern WPCA and was a pivotal force in promoting the breed from her home in the border country. She was elected President of the Society in 1985 and awarded an Honorary Life membership for her services to the Society, its members and the breed.
She judged the Welsh Ponies Section B at the 1973 Royal Welsh show choosing the Solway Master Bronze son – Moorfields Tarragon as her Male champion and the renowned Reeves Fairy Lustre as Female Champion taking the overall title.
The Society wishes to extend its sympathy to her family and friends.
