WPCS Performance Show 2015

The Welsh Pony & Performance Show was once again held at the Triley Fields Equestrian Centre near Abergavenny but the date was put back a week to the bank holiday weekend of the 23rd & 24th of May to avoid clashing with the Royal Welsh Spring Festival as it had done the previous year.  The date seemed to suit as more than 100 ponies were entered over the weekend.  The show had the support of generous sponsors & a very hard working committee who were aided throughout by a friendly and diplomatic band of judges, stewards, course builders & helpers.  The WPCS exhibition unit & promotions team were at the show for the two days and the show was also visited by the Society’s Secretary, Roo Johnstone who came along with his family to see for himself how well the show is run.

Classes were available for Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D, Small Part-Bred & Large Part-Bred in the following disciplines: Dressage, Hunter Trials, Show Jumping (so in effect a three part eventing discipline) as well as Novice & Open Ridden Classes, including mini classes and Novice & Open Working Hunter Classes. As always competitors were free to compete in as many or few classes as they wished, with points from all of these going towards the final tally. There were also Welsh & Pleasure Driving Classes although currently the Driving Class’s results do not add towards the overall competition results.

This year’s president of the WPCS, Mr David Harris of the Pennal Stud, was on hand to award the Supremes, and gave a small talk prior to the presentation about the importance and relevance of the show to help promote & protect our beloved Welsh Ponies, Cobs & Part-Breds. The Supreme Points Champion was, for the second year running, the Section C gelding Dycott Mark of Excellence, ridden by Violet Ward and owned by her mother, Alex, who purchased him from the Dycott Stud as a yearling seven years ago.  With 33 points, he took the Supreme by just the one point, performing well across the board but really coming into his own with the timed section of the Hunter Trials & Jump Off in the Show Jumping.

Reserve Points Champion (sponsored by the Taraco Stud) was the seasoned under saddle campaigner Powys (NL) Sprite, a 10 year old Section A stallion exhibited and ridden by India Latter. The pair won their dressage class, the Open Ridden Supreme, the NPS Silver Medal as well as the Working Hunters Open Championship.  The Supreme Champion normally receives a portrait kindly painted (and donated) by India’s mother Chris Latter. As Miss Ward is already a proud owner of a portrait of her pony, presented at the 2015 WPCS AGM, and as it would be a bit awkward to donate the award to her daughter India, on discussion with the Committee & winning exhibitors, it was agreed that the painting would be made of First Reserve, namely the large part bred winner Darcie’s Law exhibited & ridden by Catherine Westran.

Winner of the Novice Championship was the large part bred mare Langarth Spect-rum , bred and exhibited by the Powells with 17 points. Reserve Champion of the Novice Championship was  Cwmstar Ivy owned by Mrs G Wigley & ridden by Ffion Davies-Wigley with 12 points.  The Driving classes (sponsored by the Tireve Stud) were judged by Mrs NS Jones of the Blaengwen Stud. The classes were a bit low on numbers, but still high on quality with both the Champion, the Section C stallion Cargarsar Silver Shadow & reserve, Section A Stallion Senny Kendal, being exhibited by Clare Granger & George Mitchell of The Dycott Stud.

Every year the show is generously sponsored by Brightwells Auctioneers and each year an award is made to the highest placed exhibit which has been purchased from one of the Brightwells sales. This year it was awarded to Blackhill Tazmin owned by Liz Stewart & Bridget Samuel & ridden by Jess Stewart.  The Peter Pan Trophy (sponsored by the Latter Family) is awarded to the Section D Rider under 21 with the most points & the 2015 winner was 20 year old Serena James riding the Overall Section D Champion, a 9 year stallion, Dolebolion Outlaw.

Miss Gemma Paxford of the Fairgrove Stud judged the Open Ridden Classes (sponsored by the Ollandra Stud) & her overall champion was India Latter’s Section A Powys (NL) Sprite, with her reserve being the Section C winner, Popsters Movie Star, exhibited by Mrs J. Price & ridden by Miss Gemma Morris.   In the mini championships, the Open Lead Rein winner Malmswood Clarissa owned by Mrs N Hughes & ridden by Miss Aneira Hughes age 6 was overall champion with reserve champion being awarded to the winner of the Novice & Open First Ridden class, the 6 year old mare Colne Torpedo ridden by the very capable Miss Libby Grota who although only 10, also managed to come 2nd in the Novice Ridden class too.

Miss Lisa Barsoum of the Liaura stud judged the Novice Ridden Classes (sponsored by FSL Aerospace Ltd).  The 4 year old Section A mare, Springbourne Clarice ,exhibited by Mrs J Price & ridden by Miss Lucy Morris was her Novice Ridden Champion with the 5 year old part bred mare Penstrumbly Kanna exhibited by Mrs K Hall & ridden by Miss Rebecca Lamb &  taking reserve.

The Open Working Hunter Classes (sponsored by Gwilymparc Stud) were judged by Ms A Edwards of the Coychurch Stud & Mr A Phillips of the Amar stud. Their Champion was the Reserve Supreme Section A Powys (NL) Sprite & their reserve was the 14 year old bay Section D gelding Trenewydd Viking Warrior exhibited by Sophia Allen & Miss J Price & ridden by Sophia.

The Novice Working Hunter Classes were judged by Miss Heidi Bennett of the Popsters Stud & Mrs J Mann of the Maerton Stud who placed Tambrook Rude Boy exhibited & ridden by Miss Philippa James Champion with Stoatleytwo Red Dragon exhibited by Mrs RG Weller & ridden by Mrs J Weller.  Jane Weller is deeply involved in the running of the WPCS Awards Scheme which encourages competitors to participate in a broad section of disciplines, with points being awarded to 6th place. The results of the information submitted to Jane over the designated season are then collated and an awards ceremony is held annually.  In recognition of the importance of its ethos, the Welsh Pony & Cob Performance Show is awarded Double Points & Bonus Points towards this scheme. If you wish to take part, it’s not too late to enter your welsh pony, cob or part-bred, more details can be found on the WPCS website.

In addition to all the classes, the Welsh Pony & Cob Performance Show also runs a team event which was won by the Ceredigion B team with the Ceredigion A team being runners up.  The winning team comprised of Bryneos Tinkabelle ridden by Mandy Jones, Blaenllain DB’s Hazelnut Surprise ridden by Marina Boyes, Dolfeinog Ben ridden by Tirion Lloyd & Moon Over Miami ridden by Dawn Francis.  With the second team comprising Blaenllain Doodleba ridden by Mandy Jones, as well as Powys (NL) Sprite & Rhoson Shanco  both ridden by India Latter. It would be wonderful to see a few more areas putting forward a team for next year – there is ample stabling and room to camp for competitors coming from further afield.  Whilst the show is run with exemplary attention to detail regarding rules and regulations of each relevant Society & Class thanks in no small part to Mrs T Baldwin’s encyclopaedic knowledge of every rule book that’s ever been printed, it really is a show that has an atmosphere from a different era where competitors smile and talk to each other & help each other out if any query or problem arises. So all comers are welcome and it is an ideal opportunity and environment to try out a few more disciplines with your welsh pony, cob or part-bred, without fear of ridicule or belittlement if things don’t quite go to plan!

Nigel Burton, Chairman of the Show’s Committee handed out trophies and awards to the Section Winners & Reserves (sponsored by W.M Nicholls & Co.Ltd) who were as follows:

Section A Champion: Powys (NL) Sprite. Reserve: Dolfeinog Ben.
