WPCS Educational Visit to Aberystwyth University

WPCS Educational Visit to Aberystwyth University

Students at Aberystwyth University were treated to an excellent display of Welsh Ponies and Cobs during an Educational Visit by the Welsh Pony and Cob Society on Wednesday 7th December 2011. The WPCS regularly visits Equine Colleges and Universities to educate students on the Welsh breeds and the Society. Last year, visits were made to Hartpury College, Glynllifon and Aberystwyth University. Next year, further visits are planned for Coleg Sir Gar in Carmarthen and Reaseheath College in Cheshire.

During the visit to Aberystwyth University, students attended a classroom presentation on the history of the breed, the Society and Welsh Ponies and Cobs, delivered by Mrs Ann Jones, Chair of the Services Education and Welfare Committee.

This was followed by a practical display of all four Sections of the Welsh Stud Book, which included include a Lead Rein and First Ridden demonstration by six-year old Libby Grota on the Section A mare Rhydgwillim Gwen, followed by Sarah Russell riding the Section B stallion Moelview Chester, Katie Parry riding the Section C stallion Washingpool Llywelyn, an excellent jumping demonstration by Lisa Saycell on the Welsh Cob mare Grofield Abigail and a dressage test by Mandy Jones on the Welsh Part-bred stallion Blaenllain Doodleba. Lady Evans-Bevan provided an excellent commentary for this interactive session.

Over 40 students attended the event which had excellent reviews.  “This was an excellent demonstration of the Welsh breeds”, said Tony O’Regan, Equine-related BSc Co-ordinator at Aberystwyth University.  “Feedback and comments from the students have been really positive.  One downside is that my wife had been dropping hints about getting a pony for our little girl after watching Libby on Gwen – well I think I may now just cave in!”

The WPCS Exhibition Unit was also present, with staff and trustees in attendance to answer any queries.

In attendance: Lady J Evans-Bevan, Past President, Mrs Ann Jones, Chair of Services Education & Welfare, Mr Ifor Lloyd, Vice-Chair of Council, Ms A Prytherch, Chief Officer, Mr Roger Davies, Member of Council and Mr Eric Davies, President Elect.
