Royal Welsh Winter Fair 2015

Royal Welsh Winter Fair
30th November - 1st December 2015.

There were 605 entries in 23 horse and pony classes at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair and there was an amazing turnout when one considers the atrocious weather of torrential rain and gales. Around 20 families were shocked when they approached their cars to go home on Monday night to find them completely submerged under water and the RWAS provided taxis to take them home as far afield as Cardiff, Swansea and Lampeter. Tractors were hauling other cars out of the water until midnight.

Supreme horse or pony with judge Horse Ring commentator Mrs Maggie King was the dun Section D yearling colt Brynfa Iechyd Da and the reserve was awarded to the bay Section C filly foal Fwrog Edel. With judge WPCS former President Mrs Mary Redvers the supreme Welsh awards both went to Section As, the grey yearling colt Sarum Pinot Grigio and the reserve to the grey Section A filly foal Selehems Ca Ching.

Overall supreme Brynfa Iechyd Da was champion Section D with judge Mrs Nicola Jones. He was bought by Mr John Llewellyn-James of Avonvalley Stud, Worcester as a foal having leased his sire the dun Corscaron Cymro Llwyd in 2013 and Iechyd Da’s dam Fronarth Model Supreme was a visiting mare to Avonvalley. Model Supreme is a daughter of Fronarth Welsh Model who was Royal Welsh female champion in 1991 and 1994 and overall champion in 1996. Brynfa Iechyd Da, Ringside Zorba, London Done to Perfection and Pencalow Diego Costa who were 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Section D yearling colts at the Winter Fair were 2nd, 4th, 5th and 3rd at the Summer Show.

Reserve Section D champion was Mrs Vicky Whittle’s bay filly foal Brynithon Miss Wales who had won her class of 61 entries. Miss Wales is sired by Brynithon The Director who is a son of Brynithon senior sire Thorneyside The Guvnor and her dam Brynithon Emanuel is sired by Gwenllan Brynmor out of Tirclyn Lleuad who both lived on the Gower peninsula.

Reserve Overall supreme Fwrog Edel was Section C champion and is very much of the type which judge Mr Huw Jenkins breeds at his Brohedydd Stud. In fact Mr Neil MacCarter’s other filly Fwrog Priodas was 2nd to Edel in their class of 42 entries. Edel’s dam Cefnmelyn Gweneira was bred by the late sadly-missed Mr Brynle Williams AM and is a daughter of Hardys Gwyneth who is also the dam of Fwrog Wiliam, sire of Edel and William’s full-sister Fwrog Glain is dam of Priodas so no wonder that the two fillies were like peas in a pod.

Reserve Section C champion was another foal, the colt Rhydsarn Enzo owned and bred by Miss Iola Lloyd-Hughes who is a WPCS employee. Enzo has had an enormously successful year winning at the Royal Welsh, National Welsh Championships, Gwent and Ceredigion WPCA and overall supreme at the National Foal Show. His dam Hafodyrynys Rosette was female champion at the 2007 RW Show as a three-year-old.

Both champion and reserve Section A Sarum Pinot Grigio and Selehems Ca Ching (who were also overall Welsh champions) had Dutch connections, Pinot Grigio is sired by the Dutch-bred Vechtzicht Hywel who was Royal Welsh male champion in 2005 and Ca Ching is bred and owned by Davy Wormgoor and travelled from Holland through gales and rough seas the week-end before the Show. Pinot Grigio is another who has had a very successful showing season having won at the Royal Welsh, Aberystwyth and the Denbigh and Flint.

Section A judge Mrs Danielle Waller-Toy had plenty to choose from in the Section A filly foal class where 43 of the 63 entries turned up, they could not all be accommodated in the marquee and she selected to top six from both halves with Ca Ching being the eventual winner from Rookery Rapture, daughter of Uphill James Fox who put up a very creditable show under saddle at the recent HOYS. Ca Ching is sired by Shamrocklake Lord Caernarfon who was youngstock champion at the 2008 Royal Welsh Show.

The grey Section B yearling colt Laithehill Malvolio which was awarded the championship with judge Mr Emrys Hughes was the first of 13 lots to be offered by Laithehill Stud on the recent Fayre Oaks Sale; there were many bargains in the consignment including Malvolio at £800 bought by William Arfon Own of Holyhead, Anglesey. Malvolio’s sire Laithehill Oberon has topped the WPCS sire ratings five times also the Royal Welsh Show sire ratings twice. The good producer Laithehill Cordelia (foaled in 1981) is grand dam of Oberon and dam of Titania who is dam of Malvolio.

Reserve Section B champion, who was also reserve champion here last year, was the palomino yearling filly Fairywood Gwenllian who is sired by Fairywood Stud’s Waxwing Glimmer who was champion here in 2012.

Welsh part-breds were judged by Mrs Rosemary Rees of the Small-Land Stud, Meidrim, Carmarthen and her champion was the cremello yearling filly Sarnau Golden Souffle who was the last pony bred at the successful Sarnau Stud of the late Mrs Jane Edwards. Souffle, who was previously champion at the Royal Bath and West and Pembroke County, is produced by Mark Tamplin for Scottish owner Mrs Pat Melville-Evans who was unable to attend the Show due to snow.

Reserve part-bred champion was the large bay yearling filly Aberaeron Santillana Valentina owned by Johanna Marie Shaw and Gary Evans who are now Mr and Mrs Gary Evans! Valentina is sired by the Warmblood grade B showjumper Palousa San Sebastian (grand-son of the famous dressage stallion Gribaldi) out of the Welsh cob mare Aberaeron Black Bess whose great-great-grand-dam Nance started the Aberaeron Stud in 1944.
