Supreme Foal is Given Winning Education at Coleg Llysfasi
A foal who was delivered and cared for under the watchful eye of staff and students at Coleg Llysfasi last May is proving that her college beginnings have set her up for a winning life.
The filly foal, Pontblyddyn Dilys, has spent the summer months winning many first prize titles and championships, with her mother Pontyblyddyn Menna, owned by D.L.Hibbert.
In her most recent success, the foal was crowned Overall Supreme Foal Champion, at the NPS Area 27 Foal and Youngstock Show, held at Northop College Equine Arena.
Staff at Coleg Llysfasi took the opportunity to include caring for the pregnant Welsh Mountain Pony mare into the learning programme of Animal Care students during the final term of the last academic year.
Recognising the unique opportunity that they had been given, students at the College willingly played a huge part in caring for both mother and foal after her arrival.
The college are now remaining in regular contact with the Pontblyddyn Stud, to keep a track of Dilys’ growing successes.
Coleg Llysfasi Animal Care Technician, Ceri Hibbert said:
“We were very keen to care for the pregnant Welsh Mountain Pony mare at the Coleg Llysfasi Animal Care Centre. Although a number of our staff had the expertise and background to care for the mare, we never had the resources to share this knowledge and skill with our students until this point.
“All of the groups became involved at some stage of caring for the pregnant mare and foal, which proved to be an excellent and unique opportunity.
“It is brilliant to see Dilys now winning rosettes and championships; we do like to think that Llysfasi students played a small part in this.”
