Pembrokeshire County Show 2014

Pembrokeshire County
19-21 August 2014

There was an attendance of almost 90,000 at the Pembrokeshire Show, the second largest in Wales. Exhibits turned up in good numbers in most classes e.g. 13 two- and three-year-old Section A fillies and 19 ridden Section Ds. It was the winner of this last class, Alex Williams’ six-year-old bay home-bred stallion Ringside Game Over who won the ridden Welsh championship and, with judge Mr Sandy Anderson, was proclaimed the Supreme Horse or Pony of the Show receiving £250 with the coloured Tobiano Pantyryrod Bentley owned by Maesygollen Stud standing reserve and receiving £100.

Ringside Game Over was shown successfully as a youngster e.g. 2nd Glanusk, 3rd Royal Welsh, 1st Bath and West and 1st and Youngstock champion at Cheshire County then he was leased at Stud to Denmark for two years. Game Over, sired by Llanarth Old Fashion out of the former well-known ridden mare Sydenham Gooseberry is the last remaining entire cob by Llanarth Old Fashion. On his return to the UK, Alex broke him to ride and he won championships at his first four Shows, qualifying for the Picton and also for HOYS at NCPA Staffs. At the National Welsh championships at Malvern on 10th August he won the Brynseion Section D ridden class (£200) of 24 entries.

Reserve Welsh ridden champion at Pembroke was also a Section D from the same class, Pat Burnie’s Sydenham Oxslip ridden by Phillipa James who qualified for HOYS at Northleach. Game Over and Oxslip have common blood-lines, Llanarth Lloyd George is the g-sire of both and Sydenham Oliana is the maternal granddam of Game Over and paternal g-dam of Oxslip. The other ridden Welsh winners were Heniarth Quinell (A) who qualified for HOYS at Midland Counties, Bryngwennol Royal Tribune (B) and Beth and Marged Simons’ Cwmhir Owen (C) who will find it difficult to fit the boots of Yrallt Mayday Surprise, their last year’s HOYS overall ridden champion.

Overall supreme In-hand Welsh with judge Mr Michael Daley was Ceulan Stud’s eight-year-old bay Section A stallion Weston Distinction who has been consistently successful in the showring since winning the colt foal class of 38 entries at the 2006 Royal Welsh Winter Fair. His later Royal Welsh winnings have been 1st in 2009, 4th in 2011 and 2nd in 2012 and his progeny have also been good winners. Ceulan were previously champion at Pembroke with

Ceulan Sidan in 1985, Trefaes Taran in 1997, Ceulan Cariad in 1999 and Joiners Kilkenny in 2002. Reserve Section A champion was Ceri Powell’s grey three-year-old filly Rhesfair Lady Ga Ga who was 2nd out of 56 entries at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

Mr Daley’s choice for reserve overall was the Section C champion, Eglwysfach Stud’s yearling filly Eglwysfach Ruby who, earlier this year won the largest class of the day at the Lampeter Welsh Breeds Show. Ruby is sired by the thrice-Royal Welsh champion Fronarth Robben out of Laurtom Glamour Girl who is sired by Parc Hebog out of Synod Golden Girl, g-daughter of the original Synod mare Gerynant Rosina. Reserve Section C champion was Graham Moffatt’s five-year-old brood mare Pwllmelin Holly sired by the Section D Tardebigge Emmanuel out of Pwllmelin Olivia, a daughter of Synod Sweet Dreams granddaughter of Lili Cwmcoed the other influential foundation mare at Synod. In June, Holly ventured from Gwent to the heartland of Welsh Section Cs, to the Ceredigion WPCA Medal Show and beat them all!

Champion Section B was Lesley Hillard’s eight-year-old barren mare Gryngallt Pretty Picture who qualified for the HOYS NPS/Baileys at the National Championships ridden by granddaughter Aimee and where she was reserve ridden champion to the Section D Brynmeillion Del Boy. The Gryngallt Stud was started 35 years ago with the purchase of Bengad Rita, g-dam of Pretty Picture and now the “Gryngallt” prefix appears regularly amongst the winners at major Shows.

Reserve Section B champion was Heniarth Stud’s chestnut yearling filly Heniarth Soliloquy who was 3rd out of 43 entries at the Royal Welsh where her sire Heniarth Wood Wind was champion. Her breeding is four generations of Rhoson back to Downland Rhamant foaled in 1976.

Section Ds turned up in good numbers, their champion and reserve were both mares, the five-year-old bay brood mare Aberlogin Amazing Grace produced by Paul Harper and Stephanie Downing for Byron Preston of Llanmorlais, Swansea and the six-year-old black barren mare Abbeyfield April Rose produced by Justin Walters for Edward James of Warsash, Southampton.

Amazing Grace, who won the junior brood mare class of 28 entries at this year’s Royal Welsh, is sired by Drogeda Stormy Tempest who was Royal Welsh youngstock champion in 2002 and reserve male champion in 2008 and the dam is Aberlogin Rosina by Derwen Desert Express. Abbeyfield April Rose is sired by the 2012 Royal Welsh Male champion Gwenllan Brynmor out of Budore Rose Bud bred by Joe Cleland in Co Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Section D youngstock champion was Arwel Davies’ black yearling filly Brynmeillion Lausanne whose dam Fronarth Fonhesig (daughter of Royal Welsh Prince of Wales champion Llamri Lausanne) was bought by Arwel on the 2009 Brightwells Sale for £11,200 (top of the Sale), a beautiful daughter of a super mare.
