National Pony Society Careers, Welfare and Education Day, Berkshire College of Agriculture 21st February 2012

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society was well represented at the NPS and Berkshire College of Agriculture Careers, Welfare and Education Day held on the 21stFebruary 2012, with animals from all four Sections of the Welsh Stud Book forward, plus a part-bred. The well-attended event was introduced by Caroline Nokes MP and contained breed displays and a range of welfare talks.  Lady Vestey presented on behalf of the Welsh breeds, with the animals forward provided by Mrs Ceri Fell.  Representing the Welsh breeds were the 20-year old Welsh Mountain Pony stallion Llwynan Llywelyn, the Section B yearling colt Llanarth Aurelio Zen, the Section C 3-yr old filly Brynseion Gwendolena, the Welsh Cob filly Danaway Lola and the Welsh Part-bred filly Terackie Georgia.

The Society’s Exhibition Unit manager, Janet Breese, was also in attendance with a display of WPCS promotional items and information packs were distributed to delegates.

The Society would like to thank Lady Vestey, Ceri Fell and Angela Kember for their excellent contribution and support at the event.

Section A

LLWYNAN LLEWELYN38456 (by LLWNAN ROCKET 26105, out of 84153 SYNOD CHATTER by SYNOD CAPTAIN 23419).  20-year old Bay stallion (born 1992). Bred by Mr & Mrs Parry of the Llwynan stud in Anglesey, owned by Mrs Ceri Fell.

A very successful show stallion, wins include Champion at Glanusk, Great Yorkshire, Devon County as well as countless Association shows, including Carmarthen, Eastern Welsh & Southern Counties. He has stood Supreme several times and has excellent movement.  He has also been a tremendous stock getter for the Popsters Stud, Churchwood Stud and now at Brynseion, where he has been senior stallion since 2003. His son CHURCHWOOD TROY is now taking over from him and has sired some super foals for Brynseion and the Leybuchts Stud in Germany who leased him for a year. As well as serving our mares Troy ran on the hill for the Eppynt Stud in 2011. LLEWELYN’s blood is highly sought after and he is proving to be a great sire of brood mares.

Section B

LLANARTH AURELIO ZEN91051 (by BORETON WHITE PRINCE 60587, out of 105884 SCRAFTON ANGELENA by TWYFORD SIGNAL 16596).  Grey yearling colt, bred and owned by Mr and Mrs Len Bigley of the Llanarth stud.

Zen has had a super start to his showing career. He was Champion B foal at both South Eastern WPCA and Southern Counties WPCA. This year he has already been B Champion at Home Counties winter show.

Section C

154431 BRYNSEION GWENDOLENA (by PARVADEAN DARIUS 61980, out of 129400 LAURTOM GWENLLIAN by BRYNMEILLION LLEWELYN 53427).  Three-year old black filly bred and owned by Mrs Ceri Fell.

"Dolly", as she is commonly known, is a daughter of the prolific show mare Laurtom Gwenllian and as a foal she was unbeaten, helping her sire top the WPCS sire ratings. She was shown as a yearling, notching up several good wins including Glamorgan WPCA and Devon County. She has been turned out since June 2010 and brought back in just before Christmas to prepare for her 3 year old season. She will probably be broken this coming winter as she should have a tremendous career under saddle.

Section D

156519 DANAWAY LOLA (by TREVALLION VALENTINO, out of 106451 DANAWAY SHANNON by TIREINION TRIPLE CROWN 23365).  Three-year-old bay filly, bred by Mr M. T. Attrell and owned by Mrs C. Fell.

Lola was lightly shown as a yearling, winning at Association shows. She has been turned out since May 2010 and has matured nicely. Mrs Fell intends showing her this year at the Royal Welsh Show.

Welsh Part-bred

WP-BR 22230 TERACKIE GEORGIA (by ROYAL COURT JESTER, a part-bred Arab, out of 143839 TERACKIE ISA, a cremello Welsh Cob, by TERACKIE WINTER SHADOW).  A three-year old filly, bred and owned by Mrs J. McEwen with 50% Welsh blood (eligibility is 12.5%).

Georgia was bought as a future ridden Western style horse. She was shown twice as a yearling, winning on both occasions. Georgia is not a typical part bred, her action is pure cob, with a bit of Arab float added in! She was brought in off the field last week.
