Northleach Show Report 2012

Northleach Welsh Pony and Cob Show
Cirencester Park, 7 July

The Northleach Show Committee were very fortunate to have the superb facilities available at Cirencester Park to enable the Show to go ahead on a day when so many Shows had to be cancelled owing to the weather. Although entry numbers held up, the numbers which actually appeared suffered as a result of the weather conditions prevailing throughout the UK.

At noon exhibitors gathered around the announcing box to pay tribute to Miss Laura Hutchins who was retiring after 30 years of acting as a very efficient secretary and a presentation to Laura of potted plants was carried out by WPCS Past President, Mrs Kathleen James of the Highland Stud.

Show President Mrs Jo Lutey awarded the overall supreme championship to the Section A champion, the grey yearling colt Blanche Montana owned by Richard Miller and Meirion Davies of the Heniarth Stud. Bred by Cerys Brook of Blanche and her mother Lorna Reynolds of Sprighbourne, Montana was admired by Richard and Meirion as a foal but only bought two weeks before the recent Royal Bath and West Show where he ended up Male Champion. Montana is sired by Cascob Silver Ghost out of Blanche Mia who was reserve youngstock champion from 287 entries at the 1997 Royal Welsh Show.

Reserve Section A champion with judge Mr Peter Jones of Menai was the Cobley family’s  five-year-old bay stallion Tryfel Triumph who can always be relied upon to move with head and tail well up and he was the sire of the champion foal Tryfel Carousel. Triumph is sired by Cascob Red Kite whose grand-sire is Cascob Silver Ghost, sire of Montana. Reserve to Montana in the youngstock championship was Kathy and Jo Sheil’s Dukeshill Piquate, an attractive chestnut three-year-old filly with four white legs and she is sired by Nantdywyll Penaig who was 2ndto Triumph in the stallion class.

Winner of the biggest in-hand class of the day, that for barren mares/geldings, was Ceulan Stud’s black Mynyddtarren Hermia sired by the 2010 HOYS ridden Section A Pony of the Year Mynyddtarren The Maverick who has qualified again this year at NPS Area 5.

Section B’s were judged by Mr Robert Parker-Jones and, although numbers were down, there were some outstanding animals present; the reserve champion was Millcroft owned and bred and the champion was out of a Millcroft dam! Champion was Shelley Dobbs’ dark palomino two-year-old filly Cadlanvalley Cashmere, an eye-catching mover who seemed to enjoy herself as she floated around the ring. Cashmere was Mrs Lutey’s choice for reserve overall In-hand, her dam is Millcroft Mufti by Cottrell Artiste.

Reserve was the dark chesnut twelve-year-old mare Millcroft Ballerina, one of the few daughters of the sadly-missed Millcroft Penny Lane, champion here in 1997 and  dam also of the 2008 Royal Welsh overall supreme Millcroft Dahlia. Mr Parker-Jones also judged the Welsh part-breds where the champion was Mrs Jane Edwards’ palomino yearling colt Sarnau Golden Spiral produced by Mark Tamplin.

Mr Jimmy Dykes’ choice for Section C champion was Russ Bennett’s flamboyant three-year-old bay colt Donys General Jack produced by Justin Walters; sired by last year’s Royal Welsh champion Bryncarreg Lightning Jack, General Jack earlier this year won 1st at Lampeter and was champion at Glanusk. Reserve champion was the five-year-old brood mare Mitcheltroy Classy Lady owned by Clare Granger and George Mitchell; a consistent winner as a youngster, she re-appeared this year at the Royal Bath and West as a brood mare and was reserve champion there also.

Clare and George went a stage better in Section D judged by Mr Tom Roberts and were champion with the smart chestnut three-year-old filly Dycott Spring Song sired by Mitcheltroy Welsh Prince. Spring Song won a lot as a yearling, including the youngstock championship at Midlands County, but this was only her second showring appearance this year.

Reserve champion was Matt Attrell's seven-year-old barren mare Danaway Rosa, full-sister to the 2012 RW George Prince of Wales cup-winner Danaway Cracklin Rose. Both are sired by Danaway Tango whose dam Trevallion Marie is full-sister to Trevallion April, dam of Danaway Flashjack Prince of Wales cup-winner in 2000, one of only six cobs ever to take the Prince of Wales cup out of Wales.

Unfortunately the heavens opened just as the driving classes entered the ring which must have been a great disappointment especially to the private driving exhibitors who presented themselves, their horses and their vehicles immaculately. Private driving winner, who was also reserve champion, was Lady Harper Adams driving her yellow dun Triad Gold Label.

Clare Granger and George Mitchell added to their tally of championships when George drove Peter Gray’s chestnut Section D stallion Thorneyside Brynawelon to capture the tricolour. George and Clare introduce drivers at a young age; at the Welsh Performance Show two-year-old George jnr accompanied his mum driving the Section A Teifi Frankie Flanagan; at Northleach nine-year-old Jack Gray was with George in the wagon.

The Ridden Championship went to the Menai Stud's dun stallion Menai Cardi Llwyd, ridden by Gemma Paxford who ended up reserve supreme of the Show. Cardi Llwyd, who won his class of 31 entries at last year’s Royal Welsh Show is sired by Menai Cosmos out of Elonwy Shooting Star, female champion at the 2000 RW Show.

The Reserve Ridden Champion went to Mr Stewart Franklin of the Sarum Stud with Springbourne Envoy. Produced by Miss Katie Parry, Envoy also won the Ridden Section A class at Glanusk Stallion Show earlier in the season.
