Northern Ireland AWPCS Winter Social

Despite the heavy snow and miserable conditions, there was a great turnout for the Northern Ireland Association ‘Winter Social’ evening on Thursday 29th January in Dromore Rugby Club.

This evening has been introduced to allow members to come along and meet the new committee and find out a little more about the Association and its plans for the future.  The event was open to both members and non-members to encourage as many people as possible to find out more about the Welsh breeds.

The evening began with a welcome from Chairman, Mr Melvyn Chadwick who handed over to special guest speaker, Mr Terry Court.

Mr Court started with Brightwells Auctioneers (then Russell, Baldwin and Bright) in 1955, and celebrates his 60th year with the Company on September 1st this year. Terry has probably sold more livestock and horses in those sixty years than any other practising auctioneer in the UK. He was Chairman and Director of Hereford Market Auctioneers for a good many years and has been an official auctioneer and valuer for all the major cattle and sheep societies. He has also been one of Her Majesty's arbitrators for many years.

He had the honour to be asked to be President of the WPCS in 2010/2011 and he owes some of his most splendid memories and days in selling Welsh ponies and cobs. Under his guidance the Brightwells has expanded its equine activities over the last thirty years and they are now one of the United Kingdom’s leading auctioneers of all types of equine, with amazingly successful sales of bloodstock at both Cheltenham and Ascot. The company now sells under his guidance over 7,000 horses and ponies annually.

The event then culminated with a delicious supper provided by Lillians’ Outside Catering Services.  This Winter Social Evening is the first event of the year for the NIAWPCS and will be followed by Spring Show on Saturday 11th April at Knockagh View EC. Other events during the year include the Diamond Championship on Thursday 9th July 2015 at Meadows Equestrian Centre Lurgan, Summer Medal Show on Monday 31st August 2015 at Knockagh View EC and an Award Evening in November, date TBC.
