Lampeter Stallion Show 2015 - Report and Full Results

Saturday the 18th of April saw competitors and spectators perform their ‘annual pilgrimage’ to the hallowed Lampeter Stallion show field in Talsarn, Ceredigion, for the 54th annual show.

Out of 493 entries, Show President Mr Terry Court, Director and Head of Equine at Brightwells auctioneers, awarded supreme youngstock and supreme of show to the bay three-year-old Welsh cob filly London Olympic Rose, produced by Paul Harper and Steph Downing from Llanedi, Pontarddulais, for breeder Stephanie Edwards from West Sussex. She is out of Trevallion Stella and by the palomino stallion Swannhill Golden Rocket (Erwwastad Llwynog x Synod Ruby Black). Golden Rocket is owned by the London stud and was seen competing here at Lampeter in 2009 when he won as a two-year-old; he was purchased to introduce ‘Synod’ breeding into the stud.

Historically this was known as ‘the first show of the season’ and a favourite stomping ground to parade stallions in the hope of gaining revenue from the premiums awarded and covering mares. This show continues in its ability to draw in that dying band of individuals known as true country characters, the completely diverse city folk, and overseas enthusiasts.

A major spectacle at this show is the afternoon’s Welsh cob stallion classes which take place at 2pm. The classes still follow the same format to when premiums were awarded with classes divided into North, Mid, South and outside Wales. For this pinnacle, the parameter of the ring was packed with spectators from the locality and abroad; some had travelled from France, Sweden, Belgium, Germany and Holland.

The Welsh cob classes were judged by Mr Arwyn Jones, Glanvyrnwy stud, Meifod, near Welshpool in Mid Wales. The outside Wales stallion class winner, William Wenham’s Thorneyside Golden Boy, was sold by show president Mr Terry Court [Brightwells auctioneers] in 2012 for £22,000 as part of the Thorneyside Stud reduction sale. The North Wales class was won by Graham Roberts’ Tawelfan Jarvis Cocker from Wrexham, an 18-year-old chestnut stallion, and shown ably by daughter Holly Roberts; he didn’t look half his age and his turnout was a credit to his owner. Peter and Ann Jones’ dun Menai Cardi Llwyd won the mid-Wales class, a stallion who has achieved so much under saddle in the past. The Merrick family’s eight-year-old liver chestnut Brynithon The Director, a son of Thorneyside The Guvnor and out of Derwen Talar, came out on top in the South Wales class.

Mrs McInnes Skinner from Norfolk awarded the Section B championship to Mr Sandy Anderson’s 11-year-old palomino stallion Stoak Tuscany (out of Stoak Taffetta), and produced by Colin Tibbey from Bala.  Stoak Tuscany won the Section B championship at last year’s Royal Highland show. This now completes the double as Mr Anderson from Loughborough also clinched the Section B championship here last year with Thistledown Arctic Rose. In reserve was the youngstock champion, William Arfon Owen’s very attractive two-year-old dun filly Greigiau Spring Mist (Hilin Goya x Greigiau Spring Sahara) from Holyhead, Anglesey.

The Welsh Mountain Ponies were judged by Ruth Phillips, Pembroke, and proved to be a show for the youngsters. Champion was awarded to Peter and Ann Jones’ homebred grey yearling colt Friarly Harrison from Llandysul, West Wales. This was en route to supreme yearling and reserve supreme youngstock under show president Mr Terry Court. Friarly Harrison’s dam, Friarly Height of Fashion, won the Section A championship here in 2010, who was also shown by their youngest son Thomas Jones. Reserve went to the grey yearling filly Dargale Vanity Fair owned by Roland Williams – the owner of Greenlands Insurance, Aberystwyth, and a major sponsor of this society – but produced by Adam and Karen Fletcher from Gloucestershire.

Mrs Christine Ingram awarded the Section C championship to Rachel Reading from Llangain, Carmarthen, with her 9-year-old black stallion Fronarth Defoe, with reserve going to the Jones family of Pennant, Llanon, with their homebred bay three-year-old filly Fronarth Miss Pendleton by their well-known stallion Fronarth Robben. Fronarth would not mind being reserve since they bred the champion. Both Miss Pendleton and Defoe are out of Fronarth Nightshade who herself won the youngstock title here in 1995 and the Royal Welsh youngstock championship as a three-year-old in 1997. Two full brothers, the progeny of Parvadean Reaction and Synod Rose Pollyanna - both black with four white socks - won their classes. Jack Bowerman’s Ewyn Pepsi won the yearling colt class, and Fronarth stud’s Ewyn Robin the three-year-old class, both bred by Edwina Wyn from Anglesey. Edwina Wyn owns Parvadean Reaction, also the grandfather of Fronarth Miss Pendelton via Reaction’s son, Fronarth Robben.

The driving classes were judged by Mr Martyn Jenkins from Bishopston, Swansea. He awarded champion to the strawberry roan Section A, Clare Granger and George Mitchell’s Senny Kendal from Essex. This pony’s turnout was complimented by many, and seeing him in action was a sight to behold. Reserve went to Steve Watts’ striking black stallion Tremle Watts Up, again from Essex, providing Senny Kendal with stiff competition.

The Welsh ridden section was judged by Mrs Janice Parry from Wrexham, whilst Mrs McMurray from Dumfries judged the NPS M&M open ridden classes. Supreme ridden was Cadlanvalley stud’s Colne Tulip from St Dogmaels, Cardigan, ridden by grand-daughter Libby Grota. The Colne Tulip/Libby duo have previously achieved formidable success in partnership at National level. They won the Welsh first ridden class en route to mini and overall Welsh ridden champion. Past WPCS Young Ambassador Miss Maggie Simons’ Bookhamlodge Fireman Sam was reserve Welsh ridden champion. Messrs Faulkner and Eynon’s lead rein Cefngorwydd Sioni from Abergavenny took the NPS championship and reserve supreme ridden, with the Russell family’s homebred Ceinewyddfach Seren by the late Derwen Quartz in reserve.

A new class at this show was that for geldings with champion being awarded to Sharon Charlton’s Section C Joyton Booster from Newcastle Emlyn.
