Horse of the Year Show 2013
The Welsh have done it again at the Horse Of The Year Show at the NEC Birmingham on 9th-13th October.
The NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds Mountain and Moorland Supreme Pony of the Year (£500) judged by Mrs Elizabeth Mansfield-Parnell on the Friday evening was the four-year-old cream Section A mare Nynwood Fantasia owned and bred by Mr Terry Wall of Enfield, Middlesex. Fantasia was produced by Team Harvey and ridden by five-year-old Henrietta Rogers.
Fantasia won the Colne Mountain and Moorland Lead Rein Pony of the Year class. In addition to these Champion and Reserve, the others eligible to compete were the Champion and Reserve Champion of the following: the NPS/Baileys Horse Feeds M&M Ridden Pony of the Year, the Brineton Colne M&M Mini Pony of the Year and the PRP Rescue Services M&M Working Hunter Pony of the Year where the champion was Mrs Debbie Barr's Section A stallion Waitwith Westwind. Seven of the top nine in the PRP 122cm class were Welsh Sections A or B and also seven of the top nine in the 133cm class were Welsh Sections B or C.
This championship enabled Fantasia to compete for the Supreme Pony of the Year Championship (£1,000) judged on the Sunday evening by Ms Charlotte Dujardin and Mr Carl Hester where again she was proclaimed champion. This time the eligible animals were: the Guy Fawlkes III Intermediate Show Hunter of the Year, the Underwood Working Hunter Pony of the Year, the Kathleen Wood Riding Pony of the Year, the Sandal BMW Show Riding Type of the Year, the LEGO Friends Mini Show Pony of the Year, the Topham Barnes Show Hunter Pony of the Year, the Coloured Pony of the Year sponsored by CHAPS and the Carrs BMW Lead Rein Pony of Show Hunter Type of the Year.
Winner of the Underwood 133cm class was the eleven-year-old Section B gelding Bronheulog Harvey bred by Mrs Rowena Andrew and owned by Sophie Manners.
Nynwood Fantasia will be remembered in Wales as the winner of the two-year-old filly class at the 17th International Welsh Pony and Cob Society Show held on the Royal Welsh Showground in August 2011.
The Topham Barnes Show Hunter Pony of the Year was Mrs S Dennison and Miss R Helliwell's 133cm five-year-old bay Section B gelding Fayre Dafydd bred by Mrs Hazel Wilding-Davies of the Fayre Stud, Menith Wood, Worcester. The SHP judges were Mrs Joyce Coltart and Mr Antony Williams and five of the nine top ponies in the 122cm class were Welsh including the winner, the ten-year-old Section B mare Gryngallt Primrose (also reserve champion) bred by Mrs Leslie Hillard and owned by Brogan Taverner.
At the 2013 Horse Of The Year Show, the Welsh just could not be kept down. Following on to the Cuddy Championship to Synod Lady Lilian (C) and the overall M+M Ridden Championship to Yrallt May Day Surprise (C), there is now to be added a third championship, that for M+M Working Hunter ponies won by Debbie Barr's Section A stallion Waitwith Westwind.
Westwind has been a remarkable ambassador for Welsh Section As, a former HOYS Cuddy in-hand champion, followed by wins in the open ridden classes, he now has beaten all other native breeds as a worker.
