Extra care for horses in hot weather

As the summer warms up and the potential for heat stress in horses increases, extra care should be taken during the hot weather, ensuring water supply is maintained and may need topping up more frequently. The horse owner should offer water frequently during hot weather, even if the animal does not appear thirsty.

To help horses get through hot weather owners should ensure that the stables are adequately ventilated, it is not recommended to cover the stable doors with plastic sheets as this restricts ventilation. Particular care should be taken whilst animals are competing at shows.

Should you have any concerns with your animal please seek immediate veterinary advice.
