Glamorgan WPCA Spring Medal Show 2012

Spring Medal Show, Pencoed College
Sunday 8th April 2012

The car parks at Pencoed College were full to bursting point for the Glamorgan Welsh Pony and Cob Association Spring Medal Show on Sunday, 8th April. Some exhibitors had travelled for three and four hours to get there and there were so many entries in the yearling classes that they had to be split into separate colts and fillies.

Judges were Mr Stewart Franklin, Cullompton, Devon (A), Mr Hywel Davies, Cardigan (B & WPB), Mrs Claire Willis-Burton, Abergavenny (C & D) and Lady Jennifer Evans-Bevan (Ridden).

In-hand supreme, sponsored by Mike Poacher Cornelly Garage, with the three in-hand judges officiating, was the black section C six-year-old stallion Fronarth Defoe and reserve the grey section A ten-year-old stallion Sunwillow Jubilee.

Fronarth Defoe was produced by Danny and Ann Prater of the Rhencullen Stud for his owner Mrs Rachel Reading of the Yarty Stud, Llangain, Carmarthen who bought him as a yearling as an outcross for the daughters of her Yarty Royal Bonus, Royal Welsh champion in 2000. Defoe has not been shown much before this year but his progeny have been very successful and sold for export. Reserve section C champion was the very promising black three-year-old filly Brynseion Gwendolena owned by Mrs Ceri Fell who had made the long journey from Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire.

Sunwillow Jubilee is owned by Salima Keswani who had also travelled from Buckinghamshire, from Milton Keynes. Jubilee, who was shown by Liesl Burt of the Wensley Stud, has been a consistent winner since being awarded the reserve youngstock championship at the Royal Welsh Show in 2005. Since then he has concentrated on ridden classes where he has been a great ambassador for the Welsh breeds having been placed twice at the Horse Of The Year Show. Jubilee is one of only two Welsh section A’s graded for the Sports Pony Studbook and often beats horses at dressage. On his only previous outing this year, he was champion at the South Eastern WPCA Show. Reserve section A champion was local exhibitor Brian Taylor of Treforest, Pontypridd with his smart dun three-year-old colt Gelliniog Cracker Jack. Bred in Anglesey, Cracker Jack has won many awards in South Wales and is to be Stud stallion for the Stowhill Stud.

Winner of the largest class of the day, that for section A yearling fillies, was the Dutch-bred Shamrocklake Cherish Clemantine, produced by Tyngwndwn Stud for Henrie Leeuwenhaag of Rossum, Holland. Clemantine was the winner of a class of 73 entries at last year’s Royal Welsh Winter Fair. Second prize in this class went to another with Dutch connections, Peter de Rade’s Zonneweide Mary J Blige; his other entry the two-year-old chestnut colt Zonneweide Royal Lustre capturing the section B championship.

Royal Lustre was also successful at last year’s Winter Fair, winning the section B championship and reserve overall supreme of the Show. Reserve section B champion at Pencoed was the stallion Moelview Chester owned by the Russell family of  St Dogmaels, Cardigan. There were other prizewinners in this section sired by Chester and he himself later appeared under saddle, ridden by Anwen Griffiths to take 2nd prize.

Welsh cobs turned up in unprecedented numbers, 21 yearlings having to be split into colts won by Adam Patterson of the Lion Hotel, Builth Wells with Penybrenin Fane and fillies won by Derek Dykes of North Cornelly with Crossfield Model Lady. The championship went to the flamboyant stallion Kylebeck Crespo owned by former Neath Rugby player Richard Francis of Gower and the reserve to the barren mare Tardebigge May Queen owned by Julian Williams of the Cilmery Stud, Bwlch Brecon. These two are progeny of the top sires Crugybar Mabon Mai and Thorneyside The Terminator.

Champion Welsh part-bred was Bondleigh Seren Fach owned by Penny Yeoman of Coity, Bridgend who later appeared ridden side-saddle to win 3rdprize in the any-height class. Reserve in-hand Welsh part-bred was Penstrumbly Keith Fitere owned by Kathy Hall of Goodwick, Fishguard whose Penstrumbly part-breds have gone on to be very famous in the eventing world.

Champion ridden, sponsored by Robinsons Saddlery of Taffs Well was the eight-year-old Welsh part-bred grey gelding Haynevalley Secret Charm produced by Jonathan Hughes-Jones of Llanhari for his Devon-based owner Monica Manning and ridden by Abigail Morgan of St Clears. Secret Charm had not competed seriously until this year and is still a novice but has already won championships at Hereford Marches and the previous day at Sunnybank.

Reserve ridden champion was the Welsh cob bay gelding Ddeusant Diamond Edge owned by the Rogers family of Penderyn, Aberdare and ridden by Andrea Rogers. Diamond Edge won his class of 21 entries which included some very well-known winners; the other ridden classes contained animals which had made top prices at the Fayre Oaks and Autumn Cob Sales.

Mini champion was the grey section A lead-rein gelding Thistledown Speciality owned by Leah Dalley and ridden by eight-year-old Madison Dalley and they were also mini-champion and reserve supreme at Sunnybank the previous day. Reserve mini-champion was the section B Gryngallt Picture Frame ridden by another eight-year-old Amy Hillard and led by grand-mother Lesley Hillard of Nant-y-Caws, Carmarthen.
