Glamorgan WPCA Foal Show 2014
Pencoed College, 11th October 2014.
Good weather and easy access to the M4 Motorway brought exhibitors in large numbers to the Foal and Yearling Show. Many exhibitors were competing at Glamorgan for the first time and it is hoped that they were happy with the Show and will come again. Some exhibits had been bought for top prices at the recent Brightwells Fayre Oaks Sale, others were coming for experience prior to the Brightwells Cob Sale the following week.
Supreme champion with the three judges Mr Richard Jones (A + Young Handlers), Mr Kelvin Williams (B + WPB/Riding ponies) and Mr Gethin Morgan (C + D) was the eye-catching palomino Section D yearling filly London Glamour Girl produced for the London Stud, Pulborough by Paul Harper of the Pantydwr Stud, Pontardulais. Glamour Girl comes from a long line of palominos, her palomino sire Swanhill Golden Rocket is by the good- performing palomino Erwwastad Llwynog who is a son of the palomino mare Rhyd-Ddu Lilwen whose dam Neuaddparc Lilian is by the palomino Lyn Cwmcoed foaled 54 years ago.
Reserve Section D yearling to Glamour Girl was Malcolm Cross’ Willowcourt Captain Morgan by Gobannium Rhys. Mr Cross has two yearling colts Willowcourt Captain Morgan and Willowcourt Luke by Trevallion Georgie Boy who have been consistent winners throughout South Wales this year.
Despite the winning Section D colt foal Dyffryncowin Viscount having travelled from Carmarthen, the foal championship went to the two winning fillies, the local Alex Williams’ Ringside Lady Marie and Brynarth Sweet Temptation owned by the Brynarth Stud, Weston-super-Mare. The showing experience paid off for Viscount, at the Cob Sale he caught the eye of German Mrs Heineking-Schuette who bought him for £600, her other purchase being the dun Section C colt Mattsfield Troublemaker for which she paid £1,550.
Reserve supreme to Glamour Girl was the champion foal, the black colt Ewyn Pepsi entered by his breeder Edwina Wyn of Anglesey for the Cob Sale but purchased beforehand by Jack Bowerman who showed him at Pencoed. Described in the Sale catalogue as “will prove to be a super stallion of the future” he certainly lived up to his name and was much admired. Pepsi is sired by Parvadean Reaction (by Synod Replay) out of Synod Rose Pollyanna (f. 2005) out of Synod Rosie O’Hara (f.1995) out of Synod Rebecca (f.1986) out of Synod Ringlet (f.1975) out of Tydi Rosette (f.1964) out of the Synod foundation mare Gerynant Rosina (f.1955). Reserve Section C foal champion was Gwendraethfawr Red Flyer owned by Hannah John and shown by Chris Bevan who showed the junior cob brood mare Aberlogin Amazing Grace to win at the Royal Welsh Show.
For Section C yearlings, two blacks stood out, the winner being Mrs Dawn Groom’s elegant filly Parvadean Rihannna purchased for £4,500 at last year’s Brightwells Cob Sale and well turned out by Justin Walters. Sired by Parvadean The Governor who spent most of his life in the USA, she is out of Parvadean Rosinda, bloodlines which make her a very valuable brood-mare of the future. 2nd was Gary Freeman’s colt Brynseion Dandy Henry another of Parvadean breeding, his dam is Parvadean Delight who was the 2011 HOYS Cuddy champion and his sire Brynmeillion Llewelyn is sired by Parvadean Diplomat.
Reserve champion foal to Ewyn Pepsi was the Fairywood Stud’s palomino Section B filly Fairywood Gwenllian sired by their successful palomino Waxwing Glimmer out of Cadlanvalley Josephine who has won enough championships to fill a book. Waxwing Glimmer is sired by Eyarth Beau Geste who has been several times in the top 15 of the WPCS sire ratings and the dam is Cwrtycadno Glain, full-sister to the 2013 RW Queen’s cup winner Cwrtycadno Perlen. Reserve champion Section B foal was Oliver Jones’ Butleigh Prince Charming with the Butleigh Stud now concentrating on Section Bs having dispersed their Section As at the recent Brightwells Hay-on-Wye where they go and buy a very nice in-foal cob filly!
Section B yearlings were led by Brightwells Fayre Oaks “big money” purchases. Fairywood Stud came up trumps again to win the Section B yearling class with Laithehill Wild Orchid, full-sister to Laithehill Wild Flower (foal) who made a good price this year to Mr Lee of Ruabon and to Laithehill Wild Wind who was the top Section B at the 2012 Sale selling to Gretchen Aitken of Oregon for £3,400. 2nd placed was the good-moving dark palomino colt Hilin Sandpiper owned by the Savage family of Bristol who won the young handler classes, Luke for 7 – 11 yrs and Kelsie for 12 – 16 years. Bought for £2,300 on this year’s
Brightwells Fayre Oaks Sale, Sandpiper was the highest-priced Section B outside the High Flyer and it was his photograph which accompanied the Sale report in the Daily Post newspaper.
It was Section As which turned up in the largest numbers and again contained some of the Fayre Oaks high-price purchases. Champion foal was Ceulan Stud’s bay filly Ceulan Cressida whose three-quarters brother and former stable-mate Ceulan Louis was sold on the Fayre Oaks Sale to Nova Scotia, the only pony to be sold to Canada from the Fayre Oaks Sale for 15 years. Reserve champion foal was John and Sooraya Cooke’s bay colt Stormydown Little Rocket who is sired by the palomino Ceulan Calon Lan whose dam, Ceulan Cariad is also maternal g-dam of Cressida. Cariad, who has won at the Royal Welsh twice, produced 15 foals, 2 of which went to the USA, 2 to Holland, 1 to Spain and 1 to France and 3 daughters remain at Ceulan including Cara, dam of Cressida.
Winner of the Section A yearling class was Michael Cobley’s grey colt Tryfel Genesis, sired by the successful Tryfel Triumph, his dam is Tryfel Classy Lady whose sire and dam Tryfel Dynamite and Tryfel Bethan are both sired by Ty’rcapel Sprig. 2nd to Genesis was Ryan Wilson’s chestnut colt Meisgyn Captain Sam sired by Heniarth Quip out of Ceulan Caryn, daughter of Ceulan Cusan who is another daughter of Ceulan Cariad.
